If you have come looking for the topic like this, it means you are struggling to meditate or may be you have tried it many times but failed again.
There is no Guru mantra for meditation. As I say all things come from practice and so does this process also. I have a friend who gets up at 4 o’clock for meditation and doing it for almost last 6 months. While explaining more about the process she told me she is still struggling in-spite of the fact that she does it everyday. But she is happy with the fact that she gets up everyday so early for this thing. And I am sure soon she will enjoy the practice also.
Why is it that we struggle a lot with this practice? Why is that some people are so good in it that they get it immediately? Well, the answer is simple. Our mind is just like a monkey. “Monkey mind” refers to unsettled, restless mind.So the first and foremost thing is to make shut down all the chatter and try to focus.Well it is the most difficult thing but not impossible.
Meditation will not only help you to control your monkey mind but will become a feel good factor for yourself. So coming again to the point, how to start this practice as even one or two minute is really tough.
The way I do it is to have some mantra with me. For me it is “Om Namah Shivaay”.You can say use a different one. Set a timer for 5 minutes and close your eyes. Before you sit for practice, tell yourself that you will focus on this mantra till the timer buzz off. Check your determination for 5 minutes. No wonder your mind will jump as it a monkey mind. Bring it back, tame it and start the mantra again.
So, for 5 minutes, your job is to tame it, bring it back and focus again. Try to challenge yourself when you sit for 5 minutes. If you are very impatient decrease the duration but try to complete it properly for the time duration you have set.
If you are successful here, increase the duration for seven minutes and then higher. If you want to advance further, you can replace the mantra with breathe in and breathe out thing. Focus on the breath. Remember this will be more tougher as there is no mantra to focus. However focus on the breath. Feel it moving through the wind pipe and landing in the lungs and feel out the exhale process. Again put a timer and focus.
Well last is to practice. There is no skill which can’t be gained with practice. If others can why can’t you. Enjoy this process and this time. Remember the most important things in life are free.Happy practicing.
