I was traveling a lot in the past two weeks. Irregular schedules, different places and too much work (personal + official) had taken a toll of my Yoga Practice. I feel little low for skipping my Yoga physical practice. I believe I have to be more determined to follow the practice under any circumstance.
Nonetheless, not everything was at standstill. I followed some of the Mudras which I have learned recently. I tried Gyan Mudra which is known to reduce the stress and insomnia.
This post is in continuation with my last post on Yoga Mudra which provided an Introduction to Yoga Mudra and brief about some form of Hand Yoga Mudra.
So, let’s deep dive further and understand more about different Hand Yoga Mudra and its benefits.
A simple basic things about Yoga Mudras.
- Can be practiced any time while walking, traveling, sitting, relaxing
- Can be practiced for a duration of 10-15 minutes and can slowly increase the duration to 35-40 minutes. If it is not possible to do it in continuation, you can do in parts.
- If Mudra can’t be made in both hands, you can do it with one hand also.

Gyan Yoga Mudra
How to perform Gyan Mudra
- Touch the tip of the thumb with the tip of the index finger. You have to keep the rest of the fingers not used for Mudra as straight
Benefits of Gyan Mudra
- Used during the time of Dhyana or Meditation. It helps improve the concentration and reduces the negative thoughts that arise in our mind.
- It is beneficial for the children as it helps in improving the memory power.
- As this Mudra has an effect on our brain, it makes brain nerves strong.
- It reduces the headaches, insomnia, stress, reduces the anger.
- It is recommended to follow Prana mudra after Gyan Mudra in order to experience better results.

Vayu Yoga Mudra
How to perform Vayu Mudra
- Both the index finger and thumb are used here. You have to join the index finger with the root of the thumb.Put slight pressure from the thumb on the index finger.
- Keep rest of the unused fingers as straight.
Benefits of Vayu Mudra
- Vayu Mudra helps in reducing or eliminating all types of Vayu related issues such as – gout, arthritis, joint pain, paralysis, parkinson, sciatica, knee pain and gas formation. With regular practice the mentioned problems can be eliminated.

- It is one of the most beneficial mudras to get rid of all vayu problems with regular practice.

How to perform Prithvi Mudra
- Join the tips of the ring finger and thumb and keep the remaining three fingers straight.
Benefits of Prithvi Mudra
- Most effective Mudra in curing the weakness of the body. It helps people having low weight or even fights obesity.
- The Mudra helps in improving the digestive system.
- It helps in reducing the deficiency of vitamins from the body.

Prana Yoga Mudra
How to perform Prana Mudra
- Touch the tips of the little finger, the ring finger and the thumb. The remaining two fingers should be kept straight
Benefits of Prana Mudra
- It is considered to be an important Mudra and said to activate the prana in our body
- Prana Mudra is considered to be most effective for eyes and is said to reduce all types of eye diseases
- It is said to be beneficial for all types of disease
- It helps in reducing tiredness and fatigue
This Mudra should be accompanied with Lotus Pose or padmasana.

- Keep the tip of the ring finger at the root of the thumb.
- Now press the ring finger with the thumb hence putting a slight pressure on the thumb

If we perform Apana mudra and Vayu mudra together, the Mudra formed is called Apana Vayu Mudra

- Touch the tips of the thumb, ring finger and the middle finger,joining the index finger with root of the thumb
- Keep the little finger straight
Benefits of Apana Vayu Mudra
- It cures heart and hence person suffering from weak heart should practice it daily
- This mudra helps in releasing gas accumulated in the stomach
- Beneficial for high blood pressure, asthma, headache

Linga Yoga Mudra
How to perform Linga Mudra
- Interlock the fingers of both hands together
- Keep your left thumb straight
- Your right thumb should encircle the left thumb with the index finger
Benefits of Linga Mudra
- It is beneficial in cold and cough, sinusitis
- Also beneficial in paralysis and low blood pressure
- It is recommended to have a lots of water, fruit juice ,milk, ghee while practicing it.
- Also, one should not practice this Mudra for unduly long duration.

- Middle finger represents the space element.Here the middle finger should touch at the root of the thumb and light pressure applied with the thumb.

- It helps in curing ear related issues such as secretion from the ears, pain in the ears
- Also, effective in removing the weakness of heart and bones.
- Recommended for stronger gums.

Dharana Sakti Mudra
How to perform Dharana Sakti Mudra
- It is said that you can retain your breath in your lungs for longer duration of time by practicing this Mudra
- While you inhale, press the upper portion of the thumb with the tip of the index finger
Benefits of Dharana Sakti Mudra
- More prana vayu (air in the lungs) is available for longer time.
- Due to this the blood and body will become stronger
You can try any of the Mudra depending on the type of benefits you are seeking. Try Practicing the Mudra for 10-15 minutes and slowly increase the duration.
