Knowing the right way and right time to drink the water (as suggested by Ayurveda) will help us to regulate our Doshas ( Vatta, Pitta and Kapha).

More importantly the following things should be taken care while drinking water.

  1. No water immediately before and after meals

We all have heard from our grandparents not to drink water immediately after having a meal. Infact Ayurveda suggests to consume the water 40 minutes prior having the meal and one hour after the meal. Our food goes to epigastrium where it simulates a digestive fire for food decomposition. Water acts as a coolant. If we consume large amount of water, it will hinder the digestive process which in turns slows the digestion.

2. Drink 2-3 glasses of water after waking up

Our body has worked up all night resulting in creation of toxin. To flush the toxins and cleanses our intestines, we should consume water the first thing in the morning. This is also referred as Ushapan. Also, the amount of water should be around 2-3 glasses (650ml).It also helps against constipation and strengthening our digestive system.

3. Drink water in sips and don’t gulp it

During day time water should be consumed sip by sip. The more water stay in mouth, the more it collects the saliva which is alkaline in nature. This alkaline water neutralizes the acidity of the stomach.

4. Drink warm water or lukewarm water

It is recommended to drink warm water sip by sip. In case this is not possible, drink lukewarm water. Ice cold water is not recommended. Cold water freezes the enzymes and fluids in the gut. Hence it hinders the digestive system.

5. Drinking position matters

One should consume water in a sitting position not while one is standing.

Follow these simple and effective tips and stay hydrated.
