Why I again want to start Yoga?

October 12, 2015

I had my first tryst with Yoga in 2005. Here is a brief about how I started Yoga and how it helped me.

First tryst with Yoga

During my graduation, I was trying to reduce extra few pounds by one or the other sport activity. I used to run a lot, used to climb stairs for 45 minutes and play some sports. Despite this, none of the physical activities, were helping me to shed my extra weight!!!

After completing graduation, I had moved to Gurgaon with my aunt and joined my first job. There also, I used to run both in the morning and evening.

During that time, I noticed a group, practicing Yoga, early in the morning in the society lawn. There were around 10-15 people. I decided to join the group, no matter how much it would cost.

I was surprised to hear that they taught Yoga for free. All I had to do was to get a yoga mat. One of the members, offered me his extra mat. All and all, everything was free, the only thing that was charged was Motivation.

Journey starts

The class used to start at 5am sharp in the morning. A trained Yoga instructor used to give instructions which others had to follow.

I used to get up at 4:30 as I never wanted to be late. The class used to go for an hour. We used to start with warm up asana (postures) and then, sun salutation (surya namskar). After every asana, we used to give our body a break by deep breathing relaxation. Finally, we used to conclude with pranayama.

Being a physically active person, I used to think that asana won’t be difficult for me. I was proved wrong. I really struggled to bend my body in some way or other. Even the simplest asana (Titli asana (Butterfly asana)) was hard for me. I could find some elderly people, doing yoga with so much ease.

I was very motivated to learn and get benefited from every bit of lesson they were delivering. I never missed a single day of the class for next one year.

Small breaks in daily practice scheduled but Yoga everyday

After a year, my work load increased a lot and I had to work 24*7 for at least 7 days in a month. This used to break some of my routine. However, I used to do yoga daily at my home.

In love with Yoga

In love with Yoga

I always wanted to get rid of my belly fat and I got some thumbs up from my colleagues who noticed improvement in me.

I was asked to go to Mumbai for 3 months from my company. In Mumbai, I never missed my yoga. In fact, I used to do skipping in my hotel room as there was no gym in the hotel. I ate lunch at office canteen or sometimes skip it up with light snacks. When I returned from Mumbai, everyone around me started saying that I had lost so much weight. I realized that I was finally of the shape that I wanted. In fact, yoga and checking my diet together helped me to be in shape.

Time to roll over again

As the years went by, I became a lazy slog. I used to eat everything without thinking much about weight. I lost touch with my physical activities and that included Yoga too.

As my weight was constant, I was never worried. But I believe it made my body less flexible. After my daughter’s birth, I have again regained my old weight but I am still struggling with my belly fat. In fact, no amount of dieting can help me to reduce this.

I have decided to start my Yoga and make it a learning journey where I re-gain that flexible me.

I am starting this blog so that I will learn daily with this blog and share my learnings with you. I will be posting about asana (Yoga poses), pranayama (breathing exercise) and their difficulty levels.

You are welcome to join and start this journey with me.

Looking forward for your participation.
